Coping with the Family at Christmas
4th April 2010
Coping with the family at Christmas Christmas is a time when the family comes together; a time for celebrating, gifts and too much turkey. But for many mums it can also be stressful time as they try to juggle family life with everything else that comes hand in hand with the festive season. Lifestyle coach and working mum, Gillian Brown, gives her expert advice on how to ensure Christmas is a stress-free zone. Mums can have a tendency to take on the burden of everything themselves at Christmas but instead of battling through everything on your own, make each task a family activity – that way you are spending time together, having fun and you will have more time to dedicate to yourself. • Brainstorm some present ideas with the whole family as they might have some special insight into the perfect gift for a particular person. Utilise your kids’ computer knowledge and get them to investigate the top deals online – research done, all you have to do is buy the best present at the best price available. And the kids are happy as they have spent time surfing the net. • Embrace Blue Peter-style, get out the glitter and work on the Christmas cards together. Children love to be creative so use this to your advantage. If this isn’t your style, create a manufacturing line in the living room, pop on a Christmas movie and each person can take on a different job: one to write the cards, one to write addresses, one to pop the cards in the envelope and one to stick on the stamp. Simple! • You may want the Christmas tree to look super stylish, but getting the whole family involved with the decorating is not only fun but it means you have worked on something together. You can always change round a few of the baubles once the kids are in bed. • Children love responsibility and the chance to feel grown-up, so make the most of Mummy’s Little Helpers. When preparing for the arrival of Santa make a list of all the things that need done – whether it’s cleaning, dusting, hovering – add them to a hat and let them pick a task at random. Whoever does the best job, in the shortest time, gets a prize! Chocolate coins at the ready. • If you are having guests for a Boxing Day soiree, delegate tasks. Give everyone ownership of one job each, which means only one thing to focus on. Someone to welcome guests, someone to pour drinks, and another take coats: all while mum relaxes with a glass of wine whilst being the hostess with the mostess. Spring in your Step
4th April 2010
Spring in your Step As the mornings and evenings are lighter and our thoughts turn to Spring, many of us begin to think about our health and fitness. The long winter nights are drawing to a close and as we start to remove our heavy jumpers and layers we realise that perhaps our bodies are not in the same shape as they were before Christmas. Most of us start to feel wary about the way we look which, over a period of time, can have an impact on our confidence and self-belief. Looking good and feeling great does not mean we all have to look like supermodels. However, it does mean that we have to give our bodies a spring-clean and get rid of any excess baggage we may be carrying. Step 1: declutter your wardrobe Decluttering your wardrobe, clearing out your winter clothes and making space for your Spring looks will help you feel refreshed and ready to take on the new season. Make a pile of key trends to keep for next winter and get rid of anything you don’t wear/ don’t want to keep. Make sure you donate any unwanted clothes to a worthwhile cause. Step 2: fashion favs Choose your favourite outfit and hang it in prime position so you can see it every day. Visualise yourself wearing it and acknowledge how you feel in it. By doing this you can start to imagine what looking and feeling great will mean to you. Step 3: make time for exercise Make an appointment with yourself three times a week. If you don’t currently exercise then do some research into what is available in your area. If joining a gym is not an option then walking, swimming or running are great ways to get fit and into shape. Three times per week should kick start your metabolism and begin to make you feel more energised. Step 4: think about what you eat Healthy diet is essential so make sure you eat five portions of fruit/ veg per day. Planning is the way forward when wanting to eat the right food. Plan your meals for the week ahead: doing a weekly shop based upon your plan will keep you on track with your diet and hopefully will stop you from buying those takeaways, so it will save you cash! Step 5: water Ensure you are drinking at least 2 litres of water per day. When trying to get rid of excess baggage it’s important that you flush all the toxins gained over the winter period away from your body. Also, water is a great way to cleanse your body and skin. Step 6: get a Spring glow Pamper yourself! After all the hard work you’ve done don’t forget to treat yourself to a pamper session of your choice whether that be a facial, massage or a body scrub. Allow yourself to show the inner glow on the outside.
